Universal and Volkswagen collaborated on a project that synchronises driving and music in real time. This unique experience allows you to compose music as you drive.
Used directly through your iPhone, and processed with the Golf GTI' s built in computer, the app will keep you totally in tune with every move you make in your car, letting you control the outcome as you see fit.
Mike Diver of clashmusic.com explains that this is an "app that takes engine data from the synchronised Golf GTI’s on-board computer and processes it to produce real-time generated music, utilising the user’s phone’s array of in-built technology." In other words, you will now have the ability to create music via an application on your phone that connects to your car 's advanced system, just by just hitting the gas, or turning the wheel. App sound designer, Nick Ryan, lets us in on the difficulty of producing non-linear music, especially when we are interfering with its formation. He wants us to understand that we are the composers of this instrument (car), and the music will coincide with the decisions we make on the road.
In terms of choosing the sound, Underworld' s members Karl Hyde and Rick Smith, were an easy pick due to their passionate sound. Volkswagen wanted a melody that would create an emotional appeal to the driver, making the drive itself more intimate and enjoyable. Underworld 's music was the perfect approach to meeting these requirements, it contains such elegance and artistry, making it soothing to the soul.
